Salesperson License Information
A Real Estate Salesperson, under the supervision of a licensed Real Estate Broker, facilitates the purchase and sale of property on behalf of customers, obtains lists of properties for sale by employing broker; assists buyers (customers) of real estate to locate and purchasing property (listed with employing brokers or another broker). A real estate salesperson is associated with a real estate broker to list and negotiate the sale, lease, or rental of real property for others for compensation, under the direction and guidance of a responsible broker. A salesperson cannot operate independently. It is the responsibility of licensees to understand the Real Estate License Law.
The term of licensure is two years

These are the fees associated with a Real Estate Salesperson license.
- $65 – Initial Application
- $65 – Renewal
- $15 – Written Exam
- $10 – Change of Personal Name and/or Address (No fee is required if a name change is the result of a change in marital status)

- Hold a NYS Driver’s License or Non-Driver ID featuring a photo.
- Be a citizen of the United States or hold legal, permanent residency.
- Maintain a clean record with no felony convictions (with potential exceptions).
- Secure sponsorship from a reputable New York State Broker.

How do I become a salesperson?
The real estate industry is one of the most accessible to anyone. To be eligible for a career as a licensed salesperson, an individual must:
- Possess a NYS Drivers License or Non-Driver ID with photo
- Be 18+ years of age
- Have United States citizenship or be a legal, permanent resident
- Have no felony convictions (exceptions may apply)
- Complete the 77-hour licensing course
- Submit a signed student affidavit
- Pass the New York Department of State Salesperson licensing exam ($15)
- Pass the RESNYS in-person proctored final exam
- Find a sponsoring New York State Broker
In order to obtain your Sales License, you need 77 hours of sales class time.
You do not need to have any previous sales experience to become a salesperson, nor are there any prior education requirements. No GED required.
Unless you are a lawyer or attorney, all persons must complete 77 hours of sales time in order to obtain a license.

Anytime! Sales classes are offered seven days a week in our Farmingdale office. We also offer our Salesperson program online.
You may need to take notes during the lessons, so bring a highlighter and a notepad. We also offer our students a hardcopy textbook for a fee of $60.00.

No, you must choose one or the other.
Yes! Registration is always ongoing, and you can attend the same day. Please arrive 30 minutes prior to the class start (for a list of class schedules, click “schedules” on our index tab).
You have four (4) months from the time you attend your first course to complete the sales course and school exam.
RESNYS offers its students a one month and a two month extension after four months. We encourage all students to finish within 4 months. Contact us for details.

The Salesperson course includes 20 modules (classes) that will give you all the information you need to be a salesperson.
An eTextbook is included in all packages. A hard copy is $60.
Yes. You can re-attend any class as many times as you like within the 4 month period that you paid for, but you only get credit for each chapter once.
Absolutely! Tutoring sessions are held by our certified RESNYS instructors every week. You can also purchase private tutoring sessions with our certified RESNYS instructors. Contact us for details.
Our premium package includes tutoring sessions. Otherwise, a tutoring session can cost up to $60/hour.
Yes, you must follow the order of the chapters.
You must take our school exam. Upon achieving a 70% passing grade or higher, you will receive a certificate of completion.

No worries, you can always schedule to re-take the exam with one of our counselors. You have three attempts to pass the exam within 4 months from the start of the Class. A $25.00 fee will be assessed after the third attempt.
You will receive a certificate of completion. Save this certificate, as it proves you’ve completed all coursework. The State Department may or may not ask you to mail it in to them at some point. If you haven’t done so already, you must obtain an eAccess account on the New York Department of State website. This account will allow you to register for your state exam.
Yes, you can take both the state and school exam in any order you like, but you must successfully pass both exams in order to apply for your license.
RESNYS does not administer the State Exam. You must go to your local Department of State to take the exam. The cost for the exam is $15.00.
Congratulations! You now must find a broker to sponsor you. Once you’ve done so, you can formally apply for your Salesperson License. The cost to apply for your sales license is $65.00. Once you receive it, you can start working immediately.
Your passing school exam is good for two (2) years and your passing state exam is good for two (2) years.
